In Year 1 children begin a journey towards strong academic achievement and excellence by increasing their fluency in written and spoken languages and by developing good study habits. The positive self image developed in the foundation stage is fostered, as is every child’s eagerness to learn. Through integrated themed units, children become more enthusiastic learners in all aspects of the curriculum. |

Year 2 pupils continue their development of self confidence and good work habits. The children learn to work more independently than they did in previous years. The appreciation of books and poetry increases and pupils are encouraged to become more fluent readers and writers. The curriculum expands to include topics which encourage children to think critically about their world and to develop global and historical perspectives. |

On entering Year 3 children move into Lower Key Stage 2 and become more responsible for their own learning development. They are expected to complete work in a timely manner and continue to appreciate the rights and needs of their classmates. Children learn by doing as they complete projects, collaborate in research, share writing and problem solving and explore a range of multi-media technology. As they progress into Year 4 children are challenged with high expectations whilst also guided through carefully structured steps to help them achieve high standards in different subjects. Children have opportunities, through individual and group project work in Science and Design technology, to ask their own questions and to design ways to solve them. They develop skills in self-evaluation which they can feedback to alter their original ideas. |

Years 5 and 6 form together Upper Key Stage 2. Children in Year 5 master basic organizational skills and develop independent study skills which they are expected to use with greater independence. The aim is to create students who are able to take charge of their own learning. Children in Year 6 are expected to act responsibly and to support other children throughout the school. They are involved in paired reading programs with KS1 and take individual responsibility for specific roles. The program for Year 6 supports the transition to the increased academic and emotional demands of the secondary school. |
